On July 4, 1754 a young officer named George Washington fighting for the British Crown led a humiliating retreat from the Great Meadow of Fort Necessity in western Pennsylvania. It would be the one and only time in his legendary career that he would surrender. But the battle he lost would go down in history as the start of the French and Indian War, ultimately setting the stage for the American Revolution.
