George Washington Remembers: Reflections on the French and Indian War
Edited by Fred Anderson.
In 1786, George Washington wrote a rare autobiographical account of his service
in the French and Indian War. In these eleven pages, Washington relates the
compelling narrative of his experiences during the war, including a striking
account of the friendly-fire incident at Fort Ligonier in 1758 that
"...involved the life of GW in as much jeopardy as it had ever been before or
since...".
George Washington Remembers presents for the first time in print this
extraordinary account that offers a very personal glimpse of a self-reflective
leader seldom seen in Washington's other writings. The reproduction is
accompanied by an annotated transcription of the piece and original essays that
place the work in the context of the French and Indian War and Washington's
life.
Lavishly illustrated, this remarkable book is essential for all interested in
George Washington and our nation's founding period. Available in bookstores and museum gift shops.

Becoming
George Washington:
A CD-ROM Education Kit with Teacher’s Resource
Guide
Grades 4 through 12
Walk with your students in the steps of the young George Washington, surveyor
and soldier.
Most Americans have little knowledge or understanding of the young Washington
who came before the iconic figure. Yet, many of the characteristics associated
with Washington the Founding Father – brave, heroic, wise, inventive, smart,
wealthy, ambitious – are also associated with him as a young adult. In Becoming
George Washington, students will understand the innate qualities and life
experiences that helped Washington grow from a novice surveyor to a great
officer, statesman, and visionary entrepreneur.
The Education Kit consists of a 32-page spiral-bound Teacher’s Resource Guide
with an accompanying CD-ROM. The CD-ROM includes:
- Teacher’s Resource Guide (a duplicate of the bound guide)
- Student Resource Pages and Answer Key (20 student handout pages)
- Image Gallery (4 maps, 11 images)
- George Washington’s Remarks – Original Manuscript and Transcription
- Interactive Learning Journey: Exploring the French and Indian War
- Additional Resources
Becoming George Washington, published by French and Indian War 250, Inc.
in 2005, provides elementary, middle, and high school teachers and their
students with an opportunity to take a fresh look at George Washington. The
curriculum is based on Washington's own writings, including his "Remarks," the
rare 11-page manuscript in which he recounts his French and Indian War
experiences. Teaching strategies and resources – including primary source
documents, images, maps, and an interactive CD-ROM – will guide exploration of
how Washington's experiences as a young man influenced the man he became.
This curriculum resource was made possible by The Grable Foundation and by the
U.S. Department of Education.
